Also known as stem lettuce or Chinese lettuce, this useful vegetable combines the uses of Celery and Lettuce where the leaves and 2.5cm/1in diameter stems can be used either raw in salads or cooked
- Best sown under cover: Sept to Mar or sow directly outdoors: March to Aug.
- Sow at a seeds and cover with 6.8mm of growing medium. Germinate in 7 to 14 days.
- Will germinate at surprisingly low temperatures of 4 to 16°C (40 to 60°F) . Germination will be poor above 20°C (68°F). The perfect temperature for growth is 16 to 18°C (60 to 65°F).
- If grown in trays prick out and if sown directly thin to around 8-10 Inches, eating spare excess plants
